As an exception to its online series of Chanukkah candle lightings from the homes of members and friends across the globe – reaching between 30 and 50 each night –, the IJC community celebrated the fifth night in person on December 29 with an amazing candle lighting and party at the synagogue. There was an exceptional turnout given the time of the year and we were delighted to welcome members, friends and passing visitors in search of some Chanukkah light in these cold dark days.
Raphaël Catez, who celebrated his Bar Mitzvah with us just the day before, brought his parents and sisters along to the event, adding some extra Bar Mitzvah cheer to the celebration.
After lighting the candles, recent IJC additions Hila and Sarah A. lead the singing of traditional Chanukkah songs (we never had it so good – so we booked them already for the Seder). They included a few new Israeli songs, lifting our spirits while Sarah S., Klio and Peter DDB toiled in the kitchen, putting the finishing touches to what would be a fabulous potluck buffet. And it was worth the short wait!
Traditional sweet, oily and creamy Chanukkah fare jostled for space next to delicious savoury dishes from every corner of the globe. And judging by the almost empty dish, my first-ever attempt at kugel went down a treat. Everyone noshed and schmoozed to their heart’s content and our IJC kids had a ball!
Thanks to all who contributed!
